New Pig Barn - Farm Animal Rescue

New Pig Barn

Owing to an amazingly generous grant from Lush Handmade Cosmetics, we are very Lush logoexcited to announce that construction of our new pig barn will commence on July 30th.

This new facility will be located right next to one of the farm dams, giving the pigs the opportunity to swim and mud bathe any time of the day or night. Accommodating up to between 8 and 10 pigs, we will be able to more than double the current number of rescued pigs at Hollythe sanctuary in a fully draft-free and temperature controllable environment.

Last year one of the farm’s pigs, Holly, developed a crushed spine which is a common affliction of factory pigs who are designed to grow too fast and carry too much weight. Brave Holly took two days to drag herself from the pig barn to her favourite dam, which was where she ultimately died. The new pig barn will be located next to her dam, and we are dedicating the new barn to her memory. You can read Holly’s story here.

We are also incredibly excited that Lush will be selling a Farm Animal Rescue charity pot in stores across the country, bearing a message of compassion. The pots, which feature Holly being cuddled by her big friend Howard, ask people to buy the Farm Animal Rescue charity pot “because farm Lush's FAR charity pot lidanimals want to be friends, not food”.

The new barn will not only provide better accommodation for our current pigs, and a home for new ones. It will also enable us to move the goats and sheep into larger quarters and will provide us with a cattle management base close to the cattle paddocks. The new barn is being specifically designed for farm visitors, providing safe spaces for children to interact with the pigs in complete safety.

imageAs we are still in need of funding for the internal requirements of the barn, we are announcing our 40 bales campaign. We will need 40 bales of straw to furnish the pig barn before they move in, and we are asking you to donate a $20 bale through our donation system so that we can fully fit out the interior space.

We hope you will be able to visit us later in the year to experience the new pig accommodations yourself, and thank you so much for your generous support. While the donation from Lush has allowed us to significantly move forward in terms of our farm infrastructure, your donations and sponsorship are what keep us going from day to day.

Thank you to Lush, and thank you for your donations and sponsorships. We are that little bit closer to the compassionate world that we all seek because of your support of the sanctuary and our  community education programmes.
