Monica – FAR Volunteer

FAR Superstar for Animals

This month we celebrate Monica who is the FAR newsletter editor.

Monica and Patch

Q How long have you been working with FAR?

A little over two years.

Q What made you want to start to volunteer initially?

I had been searching for a way to help animals for some years, but could somehow never find the right thing.  During the Covid lockdown of 2020,  I came across a FAR advertisement for volunteers and applied.  I felt immediately that I had been waiting to find FAR.  Volunteering for FAR has helped me feel I am doing something positive for animals.

Q What do you love best about the work?

I love the FAR team and common cause. Everyone is so ridiculously hardworking.  We all share this vision where we are willing to donate hours and hours of our time and our lives so that the future for animals might be brighter.  I'm honored to be part of the team.

Q What do you find hard about the work?

I want to do more.  The role I have could easily be full-time, but of course, we all have other commitments, lives, and such.  I try to do as much as I can, but it's never enough (for me).

Q Who is your favorite resident?

Muffin.  When I first came to the sanctuary he had just arrived.  He'd been rescued after falling off a truck on the way to slaughter and had a hot pink bandage around most of his body.   When I met him he was venturing out for the first time with buddy Rambo and enjoying some iceberg lettuce. I wrote about him here

Q What’s something surprising about you?

My favourite food is veganaise. I eat it like dip as it's so delicious!  I am a serial rescuer of greyhounds and am up to number 7 over 13 years.  As I rescue older ones who nobody else wants,  I don't have them for long, but I enjoy giving them a wonderful life.  My current greyhound Tux's favourite food is carrots!

I'm also a professional ballroom dancer and championship adjudicator.  I competed for 17 years and traveled the world dancing, which was amazing.  I have had my own business (a dance school) for 15 years, but when it was closed during Covid I did a Post Grad in Marketing.   So I also recently started work in Digital Marketing, which I love.  I hope to use my new skills to help animals.
